East Lancashire is an ‘Elevate’ Pathfinder area. The hundreds of millions of pounds in funding commenced in 2003, and is a 15 year plan of total regeneration. Other agencies working to revitalise the region include,Lancashire County Council (LCC), Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) English Partnerships, Burnley Borough Council & Pendle Council.

Burnley is a large market town in this East of Lancashire with a population of 73,000. To the west of Burnley lie Padiham and Accrington & Blackburn, with Nelson and Colne to the north. The surrounding borough of Burnley has a population of around 90,000.


RETAIL

The town centre is home to a wide range of high street multiples includes:-
M & S, WhSmiths and Next, also an eclectic mix of independent stores. The town centre market has been established for 700 years and offers an ever expanding range of goods and services.

An exciting new shopping development is ‘The Oval’, featuring 32 new retail spaces, including a large department store – due for completion in 2009.

TRANSPORT
Burnley has 3 train stations with services stretching west to Preston & Blackpool, and east to Leeds & York. The town has good bus links to Manchester, operating from the newly built futuristic bus station opened in 2003.

There are two international airports within 45 minutes of the region, namely Manchester & Liverpool, with extensive motorway links.

HEALTH & LEISURE
Sports facilities are extensive. There is the multi million pound St Peters’ Leisure and Medical Centre, which opened in 2006, providing the latest facilities under one roof. Close by is the award winning Crow Wood leisure and equestrian centre.

Located on Manchester Rd, ‘Hollywood Park’ is a 9 screen state-of-the-art Apollo cinema, with Dolby surround sound and licensed auditoria.

Bowling fans may choose to visit ‘AMF Bowling’, which offers 24 lanes of computerised tenpin bowling.

Burnley Football Club - home to ‘The Clarets’, are founder members of the Football league, and have played at Turf Moor since 1883, currently competing in the English Championship (previously Division 1). Turf Moor also provides excellent Conference and Event Facilities.

EDUCATION
There is £250m being invested in Burnley and Pendle’s education system, which should be completed by 2011. Building Schools for the Future (BFS) is developing 6 new state-of-the-art High Schools and a multi-faith 6th Form Centre.

An additional £70m is being provided to build on an ultra modern college campus, which will have 3 elements, namely a centre for young people aged 16-19, an adult leaning facility and a university faculty, fit for the 21st century, to be completed by September 2009.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS
£50m is also being invested to transform the Burnley Weavers Triangle into a trendy leisure and living area, creating a thousand new jobs. Manchester based Hurstwood Development Group is working in conjunction with Burnley Borough Council and English Heritage, to celebrate our region’s textile heritage. Using our unique Victorian charm with 21st Century facilities, the plan is to development Business and Leisure space with educational links over a 6 acre site, which incorporates the Leeds Liverpool Wharf Canal. There is planned to be the largest Art venue in the region. Concepts include a fashion tower, football theme park, extreme sports centre, new public spaces in town centres, and canal side living.
